SRT to SUB converter

Some older DVD players, DivX devices and subtitle tools still expect MicroDVD .sub files. Convert an SRT file into one here: choose the frame rate of your video and every caption is written in frames.

Your file is read by this page in your browser. It is not uploaded anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Open your SRT file

Choose or drop the SRT file, or several at once. It is read by this page and never uploaded.

  2. Check the SUB preview

SUB is already selected. Check the preview, or pick another format if you need one.

  3. Download the SUB file

Download the converted file, or all of them as a ZIP when you opened several.

How times become frames

MicroDVD stores frame numbers instead of times. Each SRT time is multiplied by the frame rate you choose and rounded to the nearest frame, so pick the frame rate of the video the subtitles will play with. 23.976 is selected by default; PAL videos usually run at 25.

The frame rate is also written into the first line of the file, as {1}{1}23.976, so players and converters that read it know how to time the captions.

Line breaks and formatting

Line breaks become the | character, which MicroDVD uses to split a caption into lines. A line that is entirely italic keeps its italics with a {y:i} code; other formatting, such as bold or a single italic word, is removed.

Questions and answers

Which frame rate should I choose?

The frame rate of the video file. Check its properties or your player’s media information. If the captions drift further off as the video goes on, convert again with another rate, such as 25 instead of 23.976.

Is this the same as a VobSub .sub file?

No. VobSub files from DVDs come with a matching .idx file and contain pictures. This page makes text-based MicroDVD files.

Can I convert the SUB file back to SRT?

Yes. Use the SUB to SRT converter. The frame rate written into the file is read automatically.
