CSV to SRT converter

Wrote or translated your captions in Excel or Google Sheets? Save the sheet as CSV and convert it to an SRT file. The converter finds the start, end and text columns by their headings and ignores the rest.

How to use it

  1. Save the sheet as CSV

In your spreadsheet program, save or download the sheet as CSV, with the column headings in the first row.

  2. Open the CSV file here

Drop the .csv file. SRT is already selected; the line under the file shows how many rows became captions.

  3. Download the .srt file

Load it in your player or editor, or pick another format from the list first.

How to lay out the sheet

The first row must hold the column headings, and three of them are needed: one for the start, such as Start, Begin, In or Start time; one for the end, such as End, Stop, Out or End time; and one for the words, such as Text, Subtitle, Caption or Dialogue. A heading may name its unit, as in Start (ms).

Other columns, such as a number, a speaker or a note, are ignored, and the columns can be in any order. The captions are sorted by start time, so the rows do not have to be.

Times, separators and quotes

Times can be clock times such as 00:01:02.500 or 00:01:02,500, minutes and seconds such as 01:02.5, or plain seconds such as 62.5. Whole numbers count as milliseconds when the heading says ms, or when reading them as seconds would make a typical caption last more than a minute.

Fields can be separated by commas, semicolons or tabs. Text with a comma or a line break must be in double quotes, which spreadsheet programs add for you. In a comma-separated file, a time written with a comma, such as 00:00:01,000, must be quoted too, or the comma starts a new column.

Before and after

A sheet with an extra Speaker column, saved as CSV, and the SRT result. The Speaker column is ignored, the quoted text keeps its comma and line break, and the captions are numbered from 1.

Accented letters and Excel

Older versions of Excel save “CSV” in a regional encoding rather than UTF-8. If accented or non-Latin letters look wrong in the preview, choose the right language group under Text encoding, or save the sheet as CSV UTF-8 next time.

Questions and answers

Which spreadsheet programs work?

Any that can save CSV, such as Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc and Numbers. In Google Sheets, use File, Download, Comma-separated values.

Why is my CSV file not recognized?

The first row must contain headings for the start, the end and the text. Without that row the file cannot be read as subtitles, so add the headings and save again.

What happens to rows with a missing time?

Rows whose start or end cannot be read, or that end before they start, are skipped and counted under the file. Fill in the times and convert again.

Can I keep speaker names?

Only if they are in the text column. Put them in front of the words, such as ANNA: Hello, before you save the CSV.
